A year ago, Sunny Nwazue, an American-born girl Nigerian girl, was inducted into the secret Leopard Society. As she began to develop her magical powers, Sunny learned that she had been chosen to lead a dangerous mission to avert an apocalypse, brought about by the terrifying masquerade, Ekwensu. Now, stronger, feistier, and a bit older, Sunny is studying with her mentor Sugar Cream and struggling to unlock the secrets in her strange Nsibidi book.

Eventually, Sunny knows she must confront her destiny. With the support of her Leopard Society friends, Orlu, Chichi, and Sasha, and of her spirit face, Anyanwu, she will travel through worlds both visible and invisible to the mysteries town of Osisi, where she will fight a climactic battle to save humanity.

Much-honored Nnedi Okorafor, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards, merges today’s Nigeria with a unique world she creates. Akata Warrior blends mythology, fantasy, history and magic into a compelling tale that will keep readers spellbound.

A few months ago I shared a mood board I created for the “Akata Witch” blog tour and I’m so thrilled to be back to celebrate the release of its sequel, “Akata Warrior”. Because both books feature spell-binding magic and legend woven into the story of Sunny and her journey, and I was inspired to do a little research to discover and learn more about West African mythology. What I found was a vast tapestry of stories that helped shape an amazing culture.

Eighteen-year-old Xifeng is beautiful. The stars say she is destined for greatness, that she is meant to be Empress of Feng Lu. But only if she embraces the darkness within her.

Growing up as a peasant in a forgotten village on the edge of the map, Xifeng longs to fulfill the destiny promised to her by her cruel aunt, the witch Guma, who has read the cards and seen glimmers of Xifeng's majestic future. But is the price of the throne too high? Because in order to achieve greatness, she must spurn the young man who loves her and exploit the callous magic that runs through her veins--sorcery fueled by eating the hearts of the recently killed. For the god who has sent her on this journey will not be satisfied until his power is absolute.

Set in an East Asian-inspired fantasy world filled with both breathtaking pain and beauty, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns possesses all the hallmarks of masterful fantasy: dazzling magic, heartbreaking romance, and a world that hangs in the balance. Fans of Heartless, Stealing Snow, and Red Queen will devour this stunning debut.

I’m so excited to be the latest stop on the blog tour for Julie C. Dao‘s debut novel, “Forest of a Thousand Lanterns” . This book is an epic and original retelling of the Evil Queen legend and is every bit as dark and thrilling. This book captured me from the opening pages and I was pulled in to the story of a young woman discovering that her life may hold more than she bargained for. Xifeng is the anti-hero/villain that you love to, well, LOVE. She’s a complicated, determined and multi-faceted character, and reading along as her struggle with her increasingly conflicting feelings was completely addictive.

Victoria-Margaret is the crown princess of the empire, a direct descendent of Victoria I, the queen who changed the course of history. The imperial tradition of genetically arranged matchmaking will soon guide Margaret into a politically advantageous marriage. But before she does her duty, she'll have one summer of freedom and privacy in a far corner of empire. Posing as a commoner in Toronto, she meets Helena Marcus, daughter of one of the empire's greatest placement geneticists, and August Callaghan, the heir to a powerful shipping firm currently besieged by American pirates. In a summer of high-society debutante balls, politically charged tea parties, and romantic country dances, Margaret, Helena, and August discover they share an extraordinary bond and maybe a one-in-a-million chance to have what they want and to change the world in the process.

Set in a near-future world where the British Empire never fell and the United States never rose, That Inevitable Victorian Thing is a surprising, romantic, and thought-provoking story of love, duty, and the small moments that can change people and the world.

Welcome friends, to my stop on the blog tour for the newly released “That Inevitable Victorian Thing” by E.K. Johnston. When I read the description for this book I was immediately intrigued as I’ve always been fascinated by Queen Victoria. So to have an alternate history story featuring her descendant, I knew I needed it in my life. I am a huge nerd when it comes to royalty and my fangirl mode goes on serious overdrive when you throw royal marriages in the mix. So, it’s only natural that I would want to feature some of my very favorite royal couples as part of this blog tour. I contained myself and have only listed five couples I adore but, trust me, there are PLENTY more.

Moxie girls fight back!

Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with her small-town Texas high school that thinks the football team can do no wrong. Fed up with sexist dress codes and hallway harassment. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules.

Viv’s mom was a punk rock Riot Grrrl in the ’90s, so now Viv takes a page from her mother’s past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She’s just blowing off steam, but other girls respond. Pretty soon Viv is forging friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, and she realizes that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution.

From the moment I started reading this book I KNEW I was going to end up loving it! When the time came for me to create a post to share with you for the MOXIE blog tour, I knew I wanted to do some thing fun and different that I could tie back to the book. One of my favorite parts of MOXIE were the zines that Viv created that were shared throughout the story. I decided I’d take a chance and try to create my very own zine just like Viv did as a way of quickly sharing my thoughts on the book. So, check out my contribution to the #MoxieGirlsFightBack movement! Continue reading “Blog Tour: Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu {GIVEAWAY}”

Footnotes: My Love/Hate Relationship with Audiobooks {GIVEAWAY}

footnotes 3

Well, would you look at this! An actual discussion post on my blog! You guys, my last one was on January 1st! And before that? August 25th. So, this is only my third discussion post in just about a year. Which kind of disappoints me, because discussion posts on other blogs are some of my favorites. I really enjoy the dialogue they create and it’s so fascinating to see other bookish folks thoughts and ideas. With all that being said, I really want to post more of them. From here on out, I’m going to try to post one discussion a month, ok? Hold me to it, you guys! I mean it.

So, What are we talking about today? Audiobooks!

One of the topics I consistently see on my Twitter feed is people’s passion for audiobooks. I love seeing my friends excitement over discovering an amazing audiobook. Especially when it’s because of an epic narrator(s)… it’s like striking gold. Don’t believe me? Continue reading “Footnotes: My Love/Hate Relationship with Audiobooks {GIVEAWAY}”

But behind closed doors, she's learning how to harness her powers and fulfill the obligations of her destiny. Mentored by her mother and her Zar "sisters," Azra discovers she may not be quite like the rest of her circle of female Jinn . . . and that her powers could endanger them all.

I’m so excited to share the dreamy mood board I created recently that was inspired by Becoming Jinn. One thing I loved about this book was the it was set in a coastal Massachusetts town, which just so happens to be MY neck of the woods. I drew on that theme and found some images that reminded me of some of my favorite beaches and summertime memories growing up as a New England beach bum. I also found some really great images to tie in that really bring out the fantasy elements of Becoming Jinn. I think these two elements of the book combined beautifully in the image I created below, and can really give you a sense and feel of the story Lori Goldstein created.

While I was making my board, I absolutely fell in love with that little genie lamp necklace and thought it would be a fun little giveaway to include with today’s post. So, be sure to enter below for a chance to win your own little piece of genie magic!

Fangirl Friday with Erica from Bloomsbury: One for All the Coffee Lovers

I have a confession to make, it’s not something I like to share with a lot of people because I always get strange looks and judgemental eyebrows whenever I spill my secret. But I trust you guys and I know you would never judge me for something I can’t control. What is my deep, dark secret? Here’s the truth everyone…I don’t drink coffee. Yup…that’s right. No coffee for this girl…I don’t even like it. Believe me, I’ve tried dozens of times. I’ve tried coffee with tons of cream and sugar, iced coffee, macchiatos, cappuccino, frappuccinos…you name it, I’ve tried it. I really want to love coffee though! I think about how lovely it would be to sit in a coffee shop with a good book and a yummy drink. Alas, coffee and I were never meant to be.

You know who LOVES coffee? Our friend Erica at Bloomsbury does, and she’s joining us for Fangirl Friday to share all of her favorite coffee spots from around the world. So this one is for all you coffee addicts!

Fangirl Friday: It’s Only You Hoop Art

Welcome to another Fangirl Friday here at What Sarah Read! Today I’m excited to share another AMAZING Etsy find I discovered over the holidays. Last month I shared my epic discover of Craft’ed bookmarks and today I want to tell you all about It’s Only You, an adorable shop on Etsy that specializes in handmade home decor!

I stumbled across this shop while I was searching for the perfect Christmas gift for my sister-in-law. She has the kindest heart of anyone I know and is currently starting her own business. I wanted to get her something she could hang on her wall to keep her inspired and motivated. When I found these embroidered hoops I knew I had found the perfect gift for her. I ended up buying two and she absolutely loved them. Since then I have kept a close eye on the new products debuting at this shop by following its Instagram feed. After all of the great feedback I received from my readers about the Craft’ed bookmarks feature from last month, I thought I would shine the spotlight on this Etsy gem. I mean, look at all of these adorable hoops! Continue reading “Fangirl Friday: It’s Only You Hoop Art”
