Big and sweeping, spanning from the refined palaces of Osfrid to the gold dust and untamed forests of Adoria, The Glittering Court tells the story of Adelaide, an Osfridian countess who poses as her servant to escape an arranged marriage and start a new life in Adoria, the New World. But to do that, she must join the Glittering Court.

Both a school and a business venture, the Glittering Court is designed to transform impoverished girls into upper-class ladies who appear destined for powerful and wealthy marriages in the New World. Adelaide naturally excels in her training, and even makes a few friends: the fiery former laundress Tamsin and the beautiful Sirminican refugee Mira. She manages to keep her true identity hidden from all but one: the intriguing Cedric Thorn, son of the wealthy proprietor of the Glittering Court.

When Adelaide discovers that Cedric is hiding a dangerous secret of his own, together they hatch a scheme to make the best of Adelaide’s deception. Complications soon arise—first as they cross the treacherous seas from Osfrid to Adoria, and then when Adelaide catches the attention of a powerful governor.

But no complication will prove quite as daunting as the potent attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric. An attraction that, if acted on, would scandalize the Glittering Court and make them both outcasts in wild, vastly uncharted lands…

I’m so excited to be taking part in the festivities celebrating the paperback release of “The Glittering Court” by Richelle Mead. I read this book last year and absolutely loved it. But, before I share my review and mood board from last year, I thought I’d take you a re-enactment of my reading experience of “The Glittering Court” through a series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer gifs. Why Buffy? I mean, do I really need a reason? Continue reading “Breaking News!! The Glittering Court Paperback Release!”

Laia is a slave.

Elias is a soldier.

Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

To celebrate the countdown to the release of “A Torch Against the Night” by Sabaa Tahir, I decided it would be fun to re-post my original review of “An Ember in the Ashes”, the book that started it all! If you haven’t read this amazing book, then this summer is the perfect time to do it, because “A Torch Against the night” releases on August 30th!

I was fortunate enough to receive an amazing mailing from my friends at Penguin Random House and Razorbill Books, that included a paperback of Ember, and ARC of Torch (YAHOO!) AND an amazing cuff that Laia (the main character of the series) would totally covet! It’s seriously the most amazing book mail I’ve ever received and got me even more excited for the release of Torch in just a couple of months. I didn’t think it was possible to be more excited than I already was. But I am, and now I get to share that excitement with all of YOU!

The Selection meets Reign in this dazzling trilogy of interwoven novels about three girls on a quest for freedom and true love from #1 internationally bestselling author Richelle Mead.

"Brilliant and original, Mead’s new series starts off with a bang and will leave readers on the edge of their seats until the very end."—School Library Journal

For a select group of girls, the Glittering Court offers a shot at a life they’ve only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. To high-born Adelaide, whose wealthy family is forcing her into a loveless marriage, the Glittering Court represents something else: the chance to chart her own destiny, and adventure in an unspoiled, prosperous new land across the sea.

After a chance meeting with the dazzling Cedric Thorn, Adelaide poses as a servant to join the crop of impoverished girls he promises to transform into proper ladies. But her familiarity with upper class life comes with a price: she must hide her identity from her new friends, mysterious refugee Mira and fiery former laundress Tamsin, and most importantly, from Cedric himself—even though she’s falling in love with him.

Everything begins to crumble when Cedric discovers Adelaide’s ruse, and she catches the eye of a powerful young governor, who wants her for a wife. She didn’t leave the gilded cage of her old life behind just to become someone else's property. But nothing is as daunting—or as wonderful—as the potent, forbidden attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric. One that, if acted on, would make them both outcasts in a wild, dangerous, uncharted world, and possibly lead them to their deaths.

The Glittering Court

In a word, I LOVED ‘The Glittering Court’, LOVED it! It’s everything I want in a book…drama, adventure, intrigue, secrets, romance and danger! From the very beginning I was invested in Adelaide’s journey from pampered and sheltered young woman living in an opulent world to a mysterious no-name fighting to find her place in the world. Her desire to break free from the future that is laid out before her is authentic and believable, and as you follow along on her journey you begin to realize exactly how determined she is to forge a new path. I couldn’t help but become deeply invested in her success. Adelaide is a mix of feisty and determined balanced with a healthy dose desperation and cunning.
