I cannot tell you how thrilled and honored I am to be a part of the Empire of Storms blog tour hosted by The Maas Thirteen. I almost fell over from shock and excitement when I got the email from Alexa of Alexa Loves Books, and would like to thank the lovely ladies of the Maas Thirteen for welcoming me into their little coven!
Before I jump into my review, I just want to warn everyone. I’m currently staring at a blank screen and sheer terror has overtaken me. I feel a pit in my stomach and anxiety is crawling up my neck. Why? Because I’m faced with the fact that there is no possible way that I will EVER do this book any justice. I have no words that could fully describe how much I loved it. Not gonna lie, I debated on just posting a shit ton of gifs like this one and just calling it a day…
But because I love you so much, dear readers, and because I loved this book so much, I knew I had to give it my very best try. So, again, I apologize in advance for my utter failure to fully convey just how epic “Empire of Storms” is because…it is EPIC and I’m going to do my best to break it down for you. But first, to get you in the mood, my “Empire of Storms” mood board…
This may have been the most difficult mood board I’ve ever created. I wanted to create something that conveyed the feel of the book, but do so without giving anything away. I actually ended up pretty obsessed with how it turned out and hope that you love it too. Now, on to the review…
Shock and Awe
This book starts off with a major bang. No slow reintroductions. No dipping your toes in the water. None of that! From the very start, it doesn’t take long to realize that EoS is going be revealing a TON of long-hidden mysteries. Questions you’ve been pondering for years will be answered and secrets are revealed that will totally blow you away. I have to give props to Sarah for tying everything together so perfectly! We get a ton of call outs and parallels to Assassin’s Blade, Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight, and it makes EoS so much more epic!
This book is FULL of plot twists and my jaw dropped on several occasions. Right from those opening pages…you know that this book will be a game changer! Here are some VERY SPOILERY moments that totally blew me away…
View Spoiler » I was barely 50 pages in and frickin Darrow drops the bomb that Aelin’s claim to the throne is nowhere near secure. WTF, Darrow? — The Ilken. Can we talk about the Ilken. Or, you know what? Let’s not. They TERRIFIED me! — When Manon takes her destiny into her own hands (after learning about her true lineage) and goes irontooth to irontooth with her dear granny! — Abraxos coming in and saving the day. I MAY have started bawling my eyes out! — The truth of what Elena and her father, Brannon had done all those years ago! –NEHEMIA! My heart….it’s finally confirmed that she knew all along what she was getting herself into! — Rowan and his squad of badass cousins doing the damn thing! — THE RETURN OF ANSEL!! — Lorcan giving me a MAJOR case of the tormented feels. Do I love him? Do I hate him? Why the hell did he have to call on Maeve like that?! Oh right, cause he wanted to save Elide. GAHHH….I’m so conflicted! — Maeve being the evil bitch queen that she is. I knew she was a horrible person but was horrified by the evil she’s capable of! « Hide Spoiler
Quick tip: DO NOT click on the spoiler tags throughout this post unless you enjoy being a million percent spoiled. I mean…there are some MAJOR spoilers under that tag, guys! Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
I KNOW there are soooo many more epic moments throughout this book that I’m totally forgetting about but, needless to say, EoS was packed with mind-bending, jaw-dropping plot twists. Believe me when I say that there was never a dull moment.
A lot of paths converge in EoS and it was amazing to see characters I’ve grown to know and love finally come together. I’m a huge fan of squads when it comes to my fantasy reads, and EoS does NOT disappoint. Sarah managed to bring together so many characters from different backgrounds who have different motivations, and somehow made it work. That’s not to say there weren’t any personal agendas within the group, but when the shit started to hit the fan, it was amazing to see them work together for the greater good.
Everything you love about your favorite characters is all there…Manon with her wicked and wild ways, Dorian with his cool and calculating mind, Lysandra with her grace and ferocity, Aedion with his arrogance and loyalty, Rowan with his strength and devotion…and Aelin. Ohhhh, Aelin! What can I say about her that hasn’t already been said. She’s a badass, a take no prisoners leader who will sacrifice ANYTHING to protect her friends and her home. BUT…you know what I loved most? Is that the people that surround her aren’t afraid to tell her like it is, to voice their opinions when they think she’s in the wrong. The true mark of any solid team lies in the honesty and integrity in which they treat each other. I was so blown away by the dynamics between all of the characters. This is a ride or die squad and it filled my heart with so much joy.
If you’re wondering about a certain Captain of the Guard in particular…View Spoiler »I hate to break it to all the Chaol fans, but he’s not in this book at all really, except for a few mentions of the quest he and Nesryn are on. But to be honest, I’m totally ok with that. My love for Chaol died a fast and brutal death when he refused to accept changes in Celaena/Aelin. If he truly LOVED her then he would have stuck by her side and learned to accept every side of her. I mean, Rowan doesn’t seem to have a problem unconditionally loving her! I should probably mention I’m one million percent Team Rowan. From DAY ONE! « Hide Spoiler
Quick side note…I have a newfound love for Elide. We’ve gotten to know her a bit in the past, but in EoS she truly comes into her own and her character arc is amazing! I loved absolutely every little thing about her. I have a sneaking suspicion that she will quickly become a fan favorite after this book. I couldn’t get enough of her chapters.
So many ships sail in this book….and a couple may even burn. Or do they? I’ll never tell! One of my nicknames for “Empire of Storms” is The Book of Ships. Seriously, this book has a TON of swoon and, honestly, a LOT more steam than I’m used to for a “Throne of Glass” book. I’m not complaining though…I absolutely loved it! View Spoiler »Let’s be real, I’ve been waiting for Aelin and Rowan to do the damn thing ever since that scene in “Queen of Shadows” where he walked into the bedroom with an itty bitty towel wrapped around his waist! The beach scene in EoS was EVERYTHING! « Hide Spoiler
I don’t want to give too many details away about which ships do or do not sail, but I will say that I adore how the romantic relationships demonstrated so much respect, trust and love. Partners were treated as equals and each one of them gave me so many feels. I cannot wait for the next book to see how they all play out and if they get their happy endings…or not!
By now, I’m sure you’ve gathered that I absolutely adored “Empire of Storms”. I read the first 500 pages in one day and then after I got home from work the next day, I read the last 200 pages. I DEVOURED this book and couldn’t get enough. It was a wild and emotional ride, that I’m still recovering from. I’m not going to lie, the end of EoS is BRUTAL. I was sobbing by the time I finished the last page and proceeded to cry for another five minutes. I’m not sure how I’m going to wait an entire year to find out how this epic series ends.
“Empire of STorms” is Heart pounding and heartrending, but at the same time so fulfilling and hopeful. The action, drama and romance will leave you breathless and aching for more.
