Lia and Rafe have escaped Venda and the path before them is winding and dangerous - what will happen now? This third and final book in The Remnant Chronicles is not to be missed.
Bestselling author Mary E. Pearson's combination of intrigue, suspense, romance and action make this a riveting page turner for teens.
Let’s take a moment, shall we? I’d like to mark this occasion. I wish I had banners to unfurl and a red carpet to roll out. At the very least, I could really use some confetti. Why all the fanfare and excitement? First and foremost, it’s because “The Beauty of Darkness” in finally out in the world but for me it means so much more, because I loved this book so damn much. I make no exaggerations when I say that this final book in The Remnant Chronicles series is absolute perfection and is now one of my all-time favorite books.
The perfection of “The Beauty of Darkness” lies in the way that Pearson managed to interweave all the elements we love about the first two books into this climactic finale. All of the mystery, politics, danger, romance and legend are still there, but taken to the next level. It’s a true final book in the sense that the highs are so high and the lows are so low. Everything is on the line and as a reader, I was totally along for the ride. This was by far the most emotional of the three books for me. I cried in several places and was fearful until the very end over how it was all going to play out.
Yes, there were developments that frustrated me…but in a good way. I wanted MORE for these characters! I didn’t want them to become victims to the circumstances that surrounded them. But you know what, when an entire realm is under the threat of an insanely evil man bent on utter destruction, people are forced to make tough decisions that they don’t want to make. They are forced to act out of character, whether it be for self-preservation, defending a belief or protecting the ones they love.
Yes, Lia, Rafe, Kaden and Pauline are changed people in this book. Harsh words are said, unimaginable choices are made and we see a side to many of these characters that we never knew existed. Sometimes it made me sad to see them being forced into someone so different from themselves because of the dire circumstances, but I was so thankful that Pearson was willing to make those difficult decisions for her characters. For me, it made their journey that much more believable.
Now, it may seem that this book is all just doom and gloom. Rest assured, it is not. There are so many hope filled moments and Lia’s steadfast belief in her cause and devotion to those she loved lifted up those dark moments. She did whatever she had to do in order to save her world as she knew it and for that I was so inspired. Her character arc from “The Kiss of Deception” and even “The Heart of Betrayal” was absolutely breathtaking. I love a good character transformation and Lia’s does not disappoint.
There’s so much more I could say about this book, but for fear of spoiling, I have to keep a lot of it to myself. I am truly so, SO sad that this series has come to an end. There’s still so much I want to know! Specifically, what the future holds for one unlikely pair (a development that I absolutely ADORED) and in general, I wanted more of those last couple pages because they were perfection. I know I’m being totally selfish in hoping that Pearson has a little bit more left up her sleeve. But if she doesn’t, I’m so grateful for her and the gift she gave me in this series.
“The Beauty of Darkness” is one of the very best finales I’ve ever read. The Remnant Chronicles series is not to be missed and this final book is the crowning achievement of a stunning story of hope, devotion and love.
I’m giving away a copy of “The Beauty of Darkness” to A lucky winner!
