Fangirl Friday with Morgan from Gone with the Words

Have I got a Fangirl Friday post for you today. For those of us who know and love Morgan over at Gone with the Words, we know that she’s a lover of many things! And when she loves something, she wants to share it with the world. She’s a girl after my own heart and one of the reasons I love her so much. So, Morgan took some time to decide on what she was going to fangirl about today, and the post she’s sharing with us today is pretty amazing!  You can just feel her love for Adventure Time oozing off the screen! I’m a total newbie to this series, but after reading her epic post below, I feel like a total expert…and you will too!

When I signed up for Sarah’s Fangirl Friday blog feature, the possibilities seemed endless. I could fangirl about SO MANY THINGS. Harry Potter (obviously), my love of Disney and fairy tale retellings, my passion for sports, my obsession with One Direction, my all-encompassing love for Friday Night Lights and The Office. But I settled on another show that I love and that I think more people should watch: Adventure Time!

Adventure Time already has a really large fandom; it’s been on Cartoon Network since 2010 and just signed on for season 8 (it’s currently in season 6). It’s always at Comic-Con, with lots of cosplay. You can find a million items on Etsy and I love it, including these inspiring bookmarks. It’s TV-PG but so much more than that. It’s dark and light, silly and serious, sad and hopeful. Most importantly, it’s FUN. Everyone from kids to teens to adults love the show and for good reason. Here are some of them in no particular order 🙂

It’s unique

Show creator Pendleton Ward described the show as a dark comedy, saying he enjoys the feeling of “being happy and scared at the same time.” Oftentimes AT uses silly humor and situations to talk about adult themes like love, grief, hope, friendship, and anger. And a reviewer called it a terrific show that “manages to satisfy both a desire for sophisticated (i.e., weird) writing and plain old silliness.”

The humor is often nonsensical and hilarious

Adventure Time is HIGHLY quotable! I usually let a few episodes pile on my DVR and watch them all at once, then I’m constantly texting my sister the funniest lines while I watch! Yell “OH MY GLOB”, “What the lump?” “I love you everything burrito”, “UNACCEPTABLE!!!”, or “That guy stole our triangle” and you will find fellow Adventure Time fans quicker than Jake can switch shapes.

The setting and characters are quirky and fun

The show centers around a boy named Finn and his talking dog Jake who live in the Land of Ooo and go on adventures. They live in a giant treehouse with an adorable GameBoy sized electronic named BMO. There are also a multitude of recurring characters such as Princess Bubblegum (ruler of the Candy Kingdom), the Ice King (sometimes nemesis/sometimes friend), Marceline the Vampire Queen, Magic Man, the Lich, and Lumpy Space Princess.

My favorite thing about the show, though, is that you can watch individual episodes (they’re only 15 min) but it’s more satisfying to watch them in order because the relationships between all the characters change and strengthen and evolve over time. You can also catch easter eggs and connections between eps. They also age! Finn starts off as a 12-year-old boy and is 16 in the current season. It allows the storylines to mature as well, from having a crush on Princess Bubblegum to looking for his father. And Jake the Dog has puppies with a mythical creature named Lady Rainicorn.
They have done a few genderbent episodes of Adventure Time starring Fiona and Cake as well!!! Every character, even secondary characters like Cinnamon Bun and LSP (Lumpy Space Prince, with a mustache), have been flipped and it’s fantastic! They are so much fun. And Fionna kicks so much Ice Queen ass! We come to find out that Fionna and Cake is actually fan fiction written by Ice King, which is pretty hilarious.
Adventure Time

There are lots of awesome ladies

Now the ladies! Princess Bubblegum is the ruler of her kingdom; she is a scientist, crazy smart and admired for that, a little Machiavellian, and still acts like a teenager sometimes. She has many layers to her personality. LSP is a space princess who sounds like a valley girl but underneath her superficial exterior has a heart of gold. And Marceline’s dad is the Lord of Evil but she eats the color red instead of sucking blood; she tries to be more evil than she is.
Adventure Time
As often as Finn and Jake are saving various princesses, the princesses are also saving Finn and Jake, or helping them defeat monsters, or solve puzzles. There are a myriad of female characters that show strength in all kinds of ways; no two are alike, just like none of the male characters are alike. Some are girly, some are more masculine, and many fall in between. Slime Princess, Breakfast Princess, Treetrunks the Elephant, Susan the Strong, and various candy people all populate this diverse world.

The show has a crazily intricate and mind-blowing mythology

On the surface, Adventure Time is a show about a boy and his dog being heroes and defeating evil. But beneath the surface is a much darker, sadder tale. The land of Ooo is set in a post-apocalyptic future about a thousand years after the “Great Mushroom War”, essentially a nuclear holocaust. According to Pendleton Ward, the show takes place “after the bombs have fallen and magic has come back into the world”. It’s mostly in background details, such as rusted out cars and abandoned convenience stores. But the back story is expanded on in many episodes as it affects the Ice King, Marceline, and Princess Bubblegum especially, and we have gotten some flashback episodes that fill in a lot of missing pieces about the world.

You learn that these characters are essentially 1,000 years old. And the Ice King’s back story is one of the most tragic I have ever come across. He was a scientist named Simon who survived the nuclear war and found an orphaned girl named Marceline to look after. When he finds a magic crown and puts it on, it slowly drives him insane and causes him to lose his memory, turning him into the Ice King. For the first few seasons, you had NO IDEA that Ice King and Marceline knew each other in the past. It’s heartbreaking.

Good messages and themes of friendship, love, loss, grief, and more

Like I said, Adventure Time uses bite sized episodes of insanity to explore some pretty heavy topics. Picking duty over love. Being lonely. Wanting to be a better person. The meaning of life. And the meaning of friendship. It can get surprisingly deep and emotional at times. Doing the right thing and being a good, loving person is stressed above all.

SHIPS. Lots of ships. Lady ships!

Lastly, the ships. Ohhhhh the ships! I know you all love ships!

Adventure Time

The non-ship ships
  • The Ice King with any princess; no one actually ships this, but Ice King is lonely and most of his antagonizing in season one is kidnapping princesses to marry (lol).
  • Simon and Betty: OTP. Ice King’s past self Simon and his fiance Betty (also a scientist), who does show up in a few episodes; she appears in the future (aka present show time), saves Ice King, and is looking for a way to free Simon from the crown’s influence.
  • Lumpy Space Princess: she has a crush on Finn but is also always talking about her ex-boyfriend Brad. She loves dramaaaaa.
  • Treetrunks the Elephant and Mr. Pig: total bizarre but what do you expect. They have a lovely wedding in later seasons.
Genderbent ships
  • Fionna and Prince Gumball: he’s voiced by Nail Patrick Harris btw!
  • Fionna and Flame Prince: same problem as Finn and Flame Princess below, natch.
  • Fionna and Marshall Lee (my personal fave): Marshall Lee is a hottie, there’s no way around it. And the way he flirts with Fionna is just. Yummm. Plus, he plays guitar. He plays jokes on her and is evil but what can you do?

Adventure Time

  • Cake and Lord Mochro: Just like Jake and Rainicorn except a cat and an all black/gray unicorn creature
  • Prince Gumball and Marshall: because of course
The real ships
  • Finn and Princess Bubblegum: This was my ship for a long time. Finn has a crush on PB for years and it’s adorable, bt she always tells him she’s too old for him. However, they have some sweet moments together! And they’re very good friends.
  • Finn and Flame Princess: Finn and Flame Princess both like each other and date for a bit but the fact that she can’t touch him without burning him is a bit of a problem. She also has a tendency to rage.

Adventure Time

  • Jake and Lady Ranicorn: They are dating from the beginning of the show and eventually have puppies together that have a mixture of both of their powers. Lady Ranicornalso speaks only Korean with no subtitles.
  • Princess Bubblegum and Marceline: aka Bubbline aka THE BEST SHIP. OTP. The only ship you need. THIS IS MY CURRENT SHIP. Basically, there are all these instances in the show where PB and Marcie have a lot of tension and don’t seem to like each other

Adventure Time

Let’s let After Ellen recap the ship’s origins:
“Princess Bubblegum rules over the Candy Kingdom, with a firm yet gentle hand and is Mensa levels of smart. Marceline is a bit of a rebel who plays a mean bass, and lives off the color red, not blood. A 2011 episode of Adventure Time titled “What Was Missing” caused a bit of a stir when it alluded to perhaps, more than platonic feelings between the girls. PB and Marci have a bit of contemptuous relationship that smacks of underlying teenagey feelings.  At one point  during “What Was Missing” Marceline sings a song directly to Princess Bubblegum that includes the line, “I want to drink the red from your pretty pink face.”

Well.  How do you like them apples?

At the end of the episode it’s revealed that Princess Bubblegum sleeps in one of Marceline’s old t-shirts, and thus, a ship was christened and launched on the fandom seas.  Ahoy, Bubbeline

Adventure Time

YOU GUYS. SHE SLEEPS IN MARCELINE’S OLD SHIRT. And in a later episode, goes on a quest to help Marceline recover her teddy bear (her most precious item from when she was a child) that was stolen by a witch/ My feels you guys. Unfortunately it’s not explicit canon in the episodes because of some countries where they are aired (BOOOOO) but the creator said in an interview he considers Bubbline canon. So there is hope for the future!!!!

Adventure Time

I know this was a long post, and if you made it to the bottom bravo, but I have a lot of love for Adventure Time and wish more people watched it. It’s one of the only shows I keep up with consistently. And the writing is so clever, the characters so fantastic, the darkly sinister, candy coated imagination of Ooo so wonderful. Watch it on Cartoon Network; new episodes air in Sept! And thanks for having me on the blog Sarah!! xoxo
